Nuclear Waste Repositories

In Germany the nationwide search for a nuclear repository is regulated by the Site Search Act. In the 2022 interim report “Sub-areas” of the first phase of the exploration process, the responsible Federal Society for Final Disposal (BGE) has declared 54% of Germany geologically suitable for final disposal.

In the current search step, methods are being developed with which the 90 designated sub-areas are to be significantly reduced. The aim is to select the geologically most favorable areas as possible location alternatives.

We offer technical and content-related consultations to public bodies, political organisations and authorities who wish to develop a better understanding of the assessment of their territory. To this end, we carry out screenings or differentiated analyses of the individual geological conditions and compare them with the defined requirements of final disposal.

  • Advice on the geoscientific aspects of the repository search and on their regional classification.
  • Preparation and presentation of the current state of affairs in the procedure and its support with a focus on the respective region.
  • Examination and evaluation of the methodology and geoscientific results of the search process.
  • Processing of the local geological underground data against the background of the repository criteria as an independent expert opinion.
  • Support in the internal and external handling of the topic, as well as in the fact-based positioning in the public participation process.
  • Selection, QC and processing of relevant geological-geophysical subsurface data
  • Creation of geoscientific maps and models of the host rocks
  • Special expertise in petrophysics, geophysics, sedimentology and thermal maturity development
  • Further development of data-supported 'ranking' - systems for the geoscientific-based reduction of sub-areas and prioritization of siting regions
  • External quality assurance of work processes and milestone results of the specialist authorities (review, audits, peer reviews)
